We invited Alex Brown, from Tessiant’s Senior Industry Advisors to join us in a quickfire interview to share his insights and experiences on Private Equity Transformation. Alex spent over 20 years working for 3 of the UK’s ‘Big 4’ supermarkets. He held senior commercial and marketing roles at Tesco, Asda and Morrisons with time spent both in the UK and internationally. He led the team that acquired IPL (for Asda / Walmart ) from Bakkavor, was part of the founding team of the group food sourcing division at Tesco and transformed the way Morrisons managed end-to-end procurement across the business.
What are your top 3 tips when embarking on a Private Equity Transformation?
1. Consideration – the first thing to seriously consider is if PE is the right route for your business. PE is very different from debt, for example, they will want to have an active role in your business.
2. Research – there are numerous types of PE out there and 100s of firms. Talk to people in your sector (and beyond) that have experience. Once you have decided PE is for you then getting the right fit is crucial.
3. Introductions – once you have identified which type of PE is the right fit for your business then it helps if you can get an introduction to the firms you want to engage with. Cold approach can work but these firms are approached all the time.
Where do you think Private Equity is heading in 2022, in contrast to 2021?
PE, like all business sectors, has seen a huge amount of volatility through the pandemic. They will continue to look through that lens in 2022. You need to be clear how a further spike would affect your business and how you plan to deal with it.
What is your top lesson learnt from previous Private Equity projects?
The deal isn’t done until the paperwork is signed.
